Sunrise Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Center
After hearing about the Fillacart.com site, Jessica and I had to do it. So we went around the office getting money. It wasn’t hold up style or anything like that, everybody was happy to hand over a wad of cash. After making our rounds, we collected a grand total of 150 smackaroos. Wow! I can only imagine how much food we can get. We were stoked. We wanted to run out and shop right away. Before we could go shopping, we had to make the toughest decision... What organization is going to get the loot? We researched locally, pulled out the phone book and even asked around to some of the fine folks that gave us the money. Right away we thought it would be great to help women in need. It’s astonishing that batter women live amongst us and we don’t even know it. They are like prisoners, hurt and trapped with no way out. UNLESS, they go to a battered women’s shelter. Jessica and I agreed, that Sunrise Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Center was the one. We made the call and spoke with Charlene. It turns out that people need more then just food. Laundry detergent is a hot commodity for people in need. If you think about it, it can make a weekly shop almost 5 dollars more. And it’s not a huge jug that will last you a life time. Soap is just expensive. Not to mention you have to use it. I mean if you don’t was a kids pair of jeans after a week, there going to stand up and put themselves in the washer. We added the detergent to the list. We also added holiday feast items, baby formula(u gotsta feed da kids), feminine products and Toilet Paper. We decided to meet on Friday. It was off to the races! We stopped at Winn Dixie and they had a 10 for $10 special on a lot of great things. We had a half a cart filled for about $60 and then decided to go to Save A Lot, its local discount food store. You can pick up loads of stuff for cheep cheep cheep. We got 4 HUGE jugs of laundry soap for $12.00. They also had baby food for 30¢ a jar. Zipping up and down the isles it occurred to me. Why don’t I do things like this more often? Why can’t I get together with friends and go shopping for other people? Not every week, I’d be broke. But, twice a year wouldn’t hurt. Every little bit helps and it was a blast running around like crazy people filling the cart with stuff. After checking out at Save A Lot, we were on way to delivering the goods. We got lost a little bit (a few wrong turns, lol)but we finally found it. We roll up and notified the office we were there to deliver the goods. A lady came out to help us, forgive me this was the only name we forgot in all the excitement. She came out to help unload the car. I think she was shocked. I think, she thought that when I said “we were bringing groceries”, it would just be a bag full. When she came out to my car and I popped the truck, her eyes lit up. Then we told her there’s more in my back seat. She kept thanking us as we loaded her board room table. Then we meet Penny Morrill, the CEO of the Sunrise and not to mention the nicest women in the world.. Penny wanted to get pictures for their newsletter. She also wanted to get the local paper to pick up the story. We were happy to oblige. I think this is one day of our lives we will never forget. This has a deeper impact then just bag of groceries, it’s helping the unfortunate get back on their feet. Have a full belly and not worry about how they will feed their kids. How your going to get soap to bathe them with or a tooth brush? It felt good to lift that weight. I normally take for granted what I throw in a grocery cart, it’s pretty much what ever I want. This opened our eyes. Days after our shop, I still reflect back on what we did that day. It still puts a smile on my face and my heart races when I tell other people about it.
